Requirements & FAQs

Since 1982, the best and brightest men have been joining our prestigious ranks as Hermanos of La Fraternidad. We continue to be at the forefront of academic excellence, community service, and cultural awareness at the most competitive and selective colleges and universities around the country. With more than 500 current undergraduates as presidents, officers, executive board members, administrative committee members, and leaders of various campus organizations, Lambda men are proactive and ambitious individuals that take leadership roles in affecting change and engaging in school life. We are competent, conscientious, and compassionate leaders.

Our network of alumni is also extraordinary! Lambda men are well established in virtually every field of human endeavor. From education, to social work, to medicine, to law, to politics, to finance and business, our members continue to lead and serve. Although impressive lists may illustrate notable achievements, they are not the sum and substance of who we are. The quality of La Unidad Latina is measured by the quality of its Hermanos. We are defined by our passionate commitment to uplift our community. Most of all, we are a family of brothers that care about each other and who strive to excel in all that we do. Do you have to be Latino to join LUL?

No! We are looking for individuals with vision, determination, pride, and a commitment to accomplish the goals this organization has set for itself. Hermanos come from all backgrounds. La Unidad Latina was spearheaded by its commitment to the Latino community, but we find and seek further solidarity with other ethnic groups, both inside and outside of our membership. True justice can only be achieved when we advocate for everyone and when we include all those who share our vision and provide those individuals with the opportunity of our unique national organization’s resources, both human and capital, for the advancement of our principles.

Do you haze?

No. We do not physically abuse or degrade our Caballeros (pledges). On top of the college’s hazing guidelines, Lambda Upsilon Lambda has a very strict policy against hazing; we do not condone it. Brotherhood cannot be built upon a foundation of humiliation and degradation. For additional information, visit our National’s Anti-Hazing Policy or George Mason’s FAQs.

It is our firm belief that brotherhood cannot be fostered in an environment where there is a lack of respect or regard for the safety of the prospective member and/or Hermanos. Additionally, we are open to communication between parents and our organization; should parents have any questions, they may contact our Director of Internal Affairs.

Why should I join LUL?

LUL is an organization that professionally promotes the goals and standards that it has set for itself. Our track record speaks for itself as recognized and awarded by our peers locally and nationally. We do not pride ourselves of merely being the first or the largest, we pride ourselves in being the best. Lambda Upsilon Lambda challenges individuals to think before making a decision. We don’t tell men they belong with us, those who aspire to be leaders know where to find us.

How will LUL help me succeed academically?

Each chapter within this organization has a 4.0 scholastic program and mandates that each member of the chapter maintains a minimum grade point average to remain active in the chapter. Hermanos in various professions are available to help younger Hermanos in any subject that they may need assistance with.

What makes LUL different than other organizations?

As Hermanos, our responsibility is to make the most out of the organization. Our vast network ranges from chapters at all Ivy League institutions, to chapters across the nation. LUL’s rich and elite alumni are constantly assisting undergraduates and recent graduates all over the nation with advice, career development, financial assistance, etc. Along with the benefits of support, encouragement, and friendships that last a lifetime, fraternity membership offers many practical benefits to its members. The La Unidad Latina Foundation, a 501-c-3 organization, offers scholarships to members who apply and are accepted.

Why should I go Greek?

Networking is an integral part of the college experience and Greek life provides one of the strongest foundations for social interfacing with a network of peers. Greek organizations help build networks that often prove beneficial to students when looking for internships, employment, recommendations, or employees. Being a part of our organization also allows for collaborations with other greek-lettered organizations including the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National Panhellenic (NPHC/D9), Inter-Fraternal Council (IFC), National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), and National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO).
